John married on October 11, 1903 to Ellen Elizabeth Gilreath, born September 15, 1885, the daughter of Nathan Pearson and Martha Ellen Gilreath. Nathan was the son of James H. and Elizabeth Jackson Gilreath.

Martha Ellen Hartline was the daughter of George Washington Hartline, a half-brother to John Marvin's grandfather, James Alexander Hartline. So John Marvin and Ellen Elizabeth (Betty) were half-second cousins. They had the following children.

Louis Clinton, born December 12, 1904.

Ora James, born May 15, 1908 (see dedication page for photo).

John and Betty were married at the State line Methodist Church on the Georgia side since their marriage license was issued in Georgia.

John was a well-known minister of the Gospel and was affiliated with the Church of God through most of his ministry. He traveled extensively, and the family moved all over north Alabama. He eventually pastored the Highway Church of God near Fyffe, Alabama for several years and retired there, living a short distance away. After retirement, he continued to travel and preach the Word of God. His youngest daughter Nellie lived at home for many years.

I once asked him how he traveled and he said "by air." Air ye going my way? He was saying that he usually traveled by hitchhiking. One of his grand daughters said that he once preached to the patients waiting in a doctor's office. He told them he was not trying to convert them to his denomination. He said, "if you're a Methodist, be the best Methodist you can be, if your Baptist, be the best Baptist you can be," etc.

John died at home on March 18, 1967 and was buried at Highway Church of God cemetery. Betty died on December 6, 1968, and is buried beside John. (photo of John and Betty on page 155)
