Oscar's wife, Jean, died September 27, 1964, and Oscar lived alone until death. I visited him, along with his nephew Joseph Hartline, in 1971.

Joe told Oscar that I was a Hartline, originally from Alabama. Oscar was in his 86th year and quite feeble, but able to get around. He had lost much of his eyesight and had to get close to me to see what I looked like.

His first statement was: "He don't look a Hartline to me, and besides that, there aren't any Hartline in Alabama. " Then he laughed and what followed was a very nice visit.

He showed me a book of Taxables of Berks County, which listed taxable citizens back to the late 1700s. When I looked through the book, many pages were missing. Oscar said that his father used to sharpen his razor on a strap, then to test its sharpness, he cut out a page in that book. "But," he said, "don't worry, he always checked to see if any Hartlines were listed on the page before he would cut it out. If so, he would find another page." Oscar told us several interesting stories of his childhood. Oscar D. Hartline died on March 18, 1972 (1)
