Obituary
Max Crawford
Max Crawford went home to be with the Lord April 3, 2016 at Shepherds Cove Hospice of Marshall County. Max was born March 1931 on a cotton farm in the Antioch Community of Fyffe, AL. during the Great Depression. He was a man instilled with a very strong ethic having known nothing but hard work most of his life. In 1947 he left Alabama to travel to Detroit, Michigan looking for work in the auto factories. Living in boarding houses and working as a day laborer he eventually landed a job with Ford at their automotive plant. He worked at the Ford plant on first shift and also worked a second shift at another plant nearby. He worked two full time jobs each day for several years to get ahead and save money for the eventual day he could return home to Alabama. In September of 1954 he met Shelby Hartline on a trip home and they were married in December 1954. They lived in Detroit for the next five years where their daughter Maxine and son Clifton were born. They moved the family to Fyffe, Alabama in 1959 where Max worked for Kirby Ford in Fort Payne, AL for several years. Later Max left Kirby Ford to work for Empire Gas in Fort Payne where he eventually retired as Manager of that location. Max then worked for Kilpatrick Gas for several years before retiring again, this time for good. As well as these jobs Max also raised cattle on his farm and sold real estate. He was always on the move as an entrepreneur. Max will be fondly remembered by many in the community and church members of Antioch Baptist Church of Fyffe for his willingness to help other people. Many will remember the many fish fries he cooked for church, local organizations, friends and family. One of his favorite past times was teaching young folks to water ski and fish. He loved our Tennessee River water ways and was known by many on the river. Max for over 30 years went on an annual trip with the same group of friends to Canada for walleye fishing and hunting in northern Michigan.
Max is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years Shelby Crawford; daughter Maxine C. Moses and her husband E. M. Moses of Moody, AL, Brothers Garvin Crawford and his wife Nancy of Fyffe, AL.; Willis Crawford and his wife Marcellia of Fyffe, AL; William Crawford and his wife Willodean of Greer, SC.; Visitation will be on April 5, 2016 from 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM at W.T. Wilson Funeral Home in Rainsville, AL. Services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Antioch Baptist Church, Fyffe, AL.
Max was preceded in death by his son, Clifton T. Crawford; parents, Inez Fuller Crawford and Palmer T. Crawford; sister, Waurena Crawford Holcomb; and brother-in-law, Rev. James W. Holcomb.
The family suggests that donations be made to the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund c/o Nell Owens 4492 co. road 92 Fyffe, AL. 35951 or to the Kidney Foundation.
