Dad, Ora James, (childhood nickname: "Bunk," and called O. J. by mother) was a very pleasant person.  He was a farmer up until around the time that I was born (1936).  He had a radio which, in those days, used two types of batteries, “A” and “B”.  A” batteries were low voltage to heat the filament of the tubes used in those days.  “B” batteries were higher voltage which made the tubes produce amplification.  Dad switched the batteries and connected the high voltage ones to the filaments and burned out all his tubes. He took it to a radio repair shop in Scottsboro, AL and was fascinated to watch the repairman fix his radio.  He asked how he could learn to fix radios and the man told him of a place that he could receive his training by mail.  So dad signed up and trained and then moved from Macedonia (Jackson County) to Ft. Payne (Dekalb County), AL and set up a shop to repair radios and toasters and other small appliances, etc.  He later moved his shop to a more promising town, Boaz, AL, about forty miles away and his business got going.  Then, when he was about thirty-six years old, he was drafted into the Navy during WWII and was promptly switched to the U.S. Marine Corps.  He was only in service a short time, completing basic training at Paris Island, SC and then spending most of the remainder of his time in the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, NC because of boils that came under his arms.   When the war ended in 1945, he was discharged and the boils were too.  That is, they immediately cleared up and he came home to his family, consisting of a wife and seven children.  We have always felt that God had a hand in this to preserve his life.  I know that mother spent a lot of time praying for his safety.

After dad came home, he immediately opened another radio shop, which soon became a Television repair shop as well.  I, Jim, worked with him for a while, then Ray and Doil joined him later.  When dad retired, Ray and Doil opened separate shops.  Ray later quit the Television business and Doil continued, fixing big screen TV until his death.  I went into the radio broadcasting business then, after twenty-five years of radio, switched to Television at Christian Broadcasting Network in VA.  Later, I worked for a Fox station in Tennessee, and NBC station in Bristol, VA and now work for ABC/UPN/MYNETWORKTV in North Carolina.

In dad’s retirement years he spent a lot of time studying his Bible.  He liked to talk with me about Bible subjects as often as we could.  He had smoked cigarettes since he was twelve, and developed cancer at about 70.  He quit smoking, but it was too late and he lived with cancer two years.  Ora James Hartline died of cancer, March 25, 1982 and is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Boaz, Alabama.

A number of years before Ora’s death, he and mother (Annie) recorded some of the songs they have known in their lifetime.  They put them on cassette tape and shared them with all their children.  One of dad’s favorites was: “I’ll See You in the Springtime, Little Annie.”   Since mother died almost in the Spring season, my sister Mary Ellen Hartline Tidmore decided (probably with a consensus from some of our other siblings) to play the tape of dad singing that song.  It was a most touching moment and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place.  Mom had a tremendous attendance at her funeral, to the surprise of all of us.  We didn't know she knew so many people. She had many people that she corresponded with as well as talked to on the telephone frequently, and they all loved her and many of them came to the service.  She was interested in genealogy and was given much credit for her contributions in a genealogy book about five southern families, all of whom were her kin.

Annie B. Evans Hartline died March 8, 1991 and is buried beside her husband in Hillcrest Cemetery in Boaz, AL.  Annie’s favorite scripture was Psalm 23.
