Maggie Lee Elizabeth Hartline (1) A
(1906-1978)

Maggie Lee Elizabeth Hartline was born October 4, 1906, a daughter of Clint Davis and Dacie Jane Gilreath Hartline, in the Iron Bridge community near Fort Payne, Alabama. Maggie, after graduating from Dekalb County High School, entered Jacksonville State Teachers College to study to become a teacher. In 1928, with only one quarter left in her senior year, she passed the state test for a teacher’s certificate and left college to teach in the elementary schools in Dekalb County. In the Summer of 1931, she worked in a hosiery mill in Dalton, GA between school terms.  There, through mutual friends, Maggie met James K. “Knox” Duckworth. Maggie and Knox were married May 20, 1932 at her mother’s home in Fort Payne. Knox, the son of William Marion “Judge”and Mary Jane Harkins Duckworth, was born March 13, 1905 in Union County, GA .  Maggie and Knox made their home at Fort Payne, Alabama where Maggie taught school until 1933 when their son Farrell was born. The School system at that time did not allow mothers with small children to teach. Although Maggie had planned to complete her last quarter of college and return to teaching, raising three sons and the interruption of World War II prevented her from doing so.

Maggie and Knox had the following children:

Farrell Newman Duckworth, born November 6, 1933

Jerrell James Duckworth, born July 22, 1940

Sherrill Douglas Duckworth, born January 18, 1946

In 1942-44, Maggie and Knox lived in Detroit, MI where they both worked in the war industry. In 1944, Knox was transferred to the Modification Center operated by Bechtel-McCone Corp. in Birmingham, AL where Knox worked as a mechanic on Army Air Force aircraft returned from war zones for refurbishment.  In late1945, they returned to Fort Payne where Knox worked in trucking and owned a taxicab business. Maggie remained at home until all three sons were in school and then worked for several years in a local hosiery mill before retiring in 1967. During the time Maggie worked, her mother Dacie lived with Knox and Maggie to help take care of their children.

Maggie was also a minister in the Church of God and often spoke in the pulpit of the Fort Payne church when the pastor was absent as well as on other occasions. When she went before the District Ministers Board, she was recommended by her pastor and by her uncle Rev. John Marvin Hartline, a pioneer minister in the denomination. Her uncle, who was pastor of the Letcher Church in Jackson County, was the first minister to invite her to conduct a revival after her call to the ministry in the 1930s. He was her mentor in the ministry and often encouraged her in a time when women preachers did not receive wide acceptance.

Maggie suffered a heart attack at her home in Fort Payne and died March 9, 1978. She was buried in Mount Herman Cemetery near Fort Payne. Afterwards, Knox lived alone at his home in Fort Payne until his 80th birthday when he moved to Chattanooga, TN to live with his son Jerrell.  Knox died April 28, 1989 at the age of 84 years.  He was buried beside Maggie in Mount Herman Cemetery.

1-Jerrell Duckworth.

Editors note—When I was a teenager, I spent a lot of time visiting my cousins Farrell and Jerrell Duckworth.  Both Maggie and Knox worked and aunt Dacie (Jerrell’s grandmother and sister to my grandmother) stayed with the Duckworths.  This was a wonderful Christian family; they have always been very dear to me.  Jerrell is the one who helped so much in researching and supplying a large amount of information on the Hartlines in the southeastern states and Union County, IL.  You will find references to him on many articles on the web site.  To say “thank you” is really not enough, but Jerrell is well know for his love of genealogy.  Thanks, cousin.
